  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (plus additional for dusting)
  • 1 egg
  • Oil for frying

  • In a large pot, add the chopped potatoes and cover with water. Bring to a boil and cook until fork-tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain and let cool slightly.
  • While the potatoes are cooking, heat a skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef, onion, and garlic. Cook until the meat is browned and the onion is translucent, about 5-7 minutes. Stir in paprika, salt, and pepper. Remove from heat and mix in the shredded cheese until melted and combined.
  • Once the potatoes are cooled, transfer them to a mixing bowl. Mash with a fork or potato masher until smooth.
  • Add the egg to the mashed potatoes, then fold in the flour. Mix until just combined.
  • Lightly dust your hands with flour. Take a scoop of the potato mixture and flatten it in your palm. Place a spoonful of the beef and cheese filling in the center, fold the edges over, and shape it into a patty.
  • In a large skillet, heat about 1/4 inch of oil over medium heat. Once hot, gently place a few cakes in the skillet and fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy. Place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
