Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the warm milk and activated yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- Add the eggs, softened butter, granulated sugar, and salt to the yeast mixture, mixing well.
- Gradually add the all-purpose flour, mixing until a sticky dough forms. Knead the dough until smooth and elastic, about 8-10 minutes.
- Let the dough rise in a greased bowl, covered with a cloth, until doubled in size, about 1-2 hours.
- While the dough rises, prepare the chocolate filling by combining the melted butter, cocoa powder, sugar, and chopped chocolate until smooth.
- Once the dough has risen, roll it out into a rectangle and spread the chocolate filling evenly over the surface.
- Roll the dough tightly into a log and cut it in half lengthwise. Twist the halves together and place in a greased loaf pan.
- Let the babka rise again until puffy, about 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Brush the top with the egg wash and bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
- (Optional) Brush with simple syrup after removing from the oven for added sheen and moisture. Allow to cool before slicing.
