  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 medium apples, peeled and chopped (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

  • Instructions

  • In a small bowl, combine warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for about 5–10 minutes until frothy.
  • In a large bowl, mix flour and salt together. Add in the softened butter and blend until crumbly. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture along with the egg. Stir until the dough comes together.
  • Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5–7 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.
  • Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
  • Mix the chopped apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice in a bowl.
  • Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out into a large rectangle on a floured surface. Spread the apple filling over the dough, then fold one long side over the filling, pinching it to seal. Twist the dough, creating a spiral shape, and lay it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Cover the formed kringle with a towel and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the kringle for 25–30 minutes until golden brown.
  • While the kringle bakes, mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until well-combined.
  • Once baked, drizzle the vanilla glaze over your warm kringle.
