  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon coarse sugar (for sprinkling on top)

  • Instructions

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and sugar.
  • Add the chilled cubed butter and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the butter into the flour until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Gradually add 4-5 tablespoons of ice water, mixing gently until the dough just comes together.
  • Form the dough into a disk, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  • In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice.
  • On a floured surface, roll out the chilled dough into a rough 12-inch circle, about 1/8 inch thick.
  • Transfer the rolled-out dough onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Pile the apple mixture into the center, leaving a 2-inch border.
  • Gently fold the edges of the dough over the apples, pleating as you go. Brush the edges with the beaten egg.
  • Sprinkle the coarse sugar over the crust and any exposed apples. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 35-40 minutes.
