1 pound of ground beef (80/20 for juiciness)
2 large onions, sliced thinly
2 tablespoons of butter (or olive oil if you prefer)
1 teaspoon of garlic powder
1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce
½ teaspoon of salt
½ teaspoon of black pepper
1 cup of beef broth (homemade or store-bought)
4 slices of provolone or Swiss cheese
Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
In a large skillet, over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook slowly until they turn golden and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
While the onions are caramelizing, mix together the ground beef, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper in a bowl, gently combine until incorporated.
Pour in the beef broth with the caramelized onions and allow to simmer for a minute or two.
Form the beef mixture into oval-shaped patties, about ½ inch thick, and add them to the skillet with the onions and broth. Cook for about 5-6 minutes per side until cooked to desired doneness.
Place a slice of cheese on each patty, cover the skillet, and allow the cheese to melt for about 2 minutes.
Move the hamburger steaks to plates and drizzle onion and broth mixture over the top, garnishing with fresh parsley.
