Juicy pork chops smothered in a rich, caramelized onion sauce with melted cheese—this French Onion Pork Chops recipe is pure comfort food! Perfect for a cozy family dinner, it’s packed with deep, savory flavors that will leave everyone asking for more.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 bone-in or boneless pork chops
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp sugar (optional, for caramelization)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp dried thyme
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
  • Fresh parsley, for garnish

Instructions

1️⃣ Caramelize the Onions – In a skillet over medium heat, melt butter and add onions. Cook for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden and soft. Add sugar (if using) to help caramelize. Stir in garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme.

2️⃣ Sear the Pork Chops – In another skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Season pork chops with salt and pepper, then sear for 3-4 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.

3️⃣ Make the Sauce – Deglaze the onion pan with beef broth, scraping up browned bits. Simmer for 5 minutes to thicken slightly.

4️⃣ Combine & Bake – Return pork chops to the pan, spooning onions over them. Top with cheese and cover. Simmer on low or bake at 375°F (190°C) for 10 minutes until cheese melts and pork is cooked through.

5️⃣ Serve & Enjoy! – Garnish with fresh parsley and serve warm with mashed potatoes or roasted veggies.

Notes

Prefer a thicker sauce? Stir in 1 tsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp water before simmering.
Make it extra cheesy by adding more Gruyère or mozzarella!
For a deeper flavor, add a splash of balsamic vinegar to the onions.
