Ingredients
Scale
- 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 tbsp granulated sugar
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
- 1 tbsp olive oil (for greasing)
- 8 oz mozzarella cheese, cut into 8 small cubes
- ½ cup baking soda (for boiling water)
- 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- Coarse sea salt (for sprinkling)
Instructions
1️⃣ Prepare the Dough:
- In a small bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
- In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and melted butter, then stir to form a dough. Knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
2️⃣ Let the Dough Rise:
- Coat a bowl with olive oil and place the dough in it, covering with a damp cloth. Let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
3️⃣ Shape the Pretzels:
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope, about 12 inches long.
- Place a cube of mozzarella in the center of each rope and fold the dough around the cheese, pinching the ends to seal. Shape the stuffed dough into pretzel forms.
4️⃣ Boil the Pretzels:
- In a large pot, bring 6 cups of water to a boil. Add the baking soda and carefully drop the pretzels into the boiling water for 30 seconds. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on the prepared baking sheet.
5️⃣ Bake the Pretzels:
- Brush each pretzel with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes, until golden brown and puffed up.
6️⃣ Serve & Enjoy:
- Let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm with marinara sauce or mustard for dipping!
Notes
✔️ For extra flavor, mix some garlic powder or Italian seasoning into the dough.
✔️ If you don’t have mozzarella, any cheese that melts well (like cheddar or provolone) will work.
✔️ Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days or freeze for later.
