Ingredients
- 2 lbs russet or Yukon gold potatoes, thinly sliced
- 3 tbsp butter
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk (or half-and-half for extra creaminess)
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp dried thyme (optional)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for a cheesy twist)
- ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Fresh parsley, for garnish
Instructions
1️⃣ Preheat & Prep – Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a baking dish.
2️⃣ Make the Sauce – In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter and sauté onions until soft (3-4 minutes). Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute, then slowly whisk in milk, salt, pepper, and thyme. Cook until thickened (3-5 minutes).
3️⃣ Layer the Potatoes – Arrange half of the potato slices in the baking dish. Pour half of the sauce over them, then repeat with the remaining potatoes and sauce. If using cheddar cheese, sprinkle half in the middle layer and the rest on top.
4️⃣ Bake – Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove foil, sprinkle Parmesan cheese, and bake uncovered for 20 more minutes until golden and bubbly.
5️⃣ Serve & Enjoy! – Let cool for 5 minutes, garnish with fresh parsley, and serve warm
