  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp cocoa powder
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 1 tbsp red food coloring

For the Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

1️⃣ Preheat & Prep – Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch cake pans.

2️⃣ Mix the Dry Ingredients – In a bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder.

3️⃣ Mix the Wet Ingredients – In another bowl, whisk buttermilk, oil, eggs, vanilla, vinegar, and red food coloring until smooth.

4️⃣ Combine & Bake – Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet mixture. Divide batter between cake pans and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Let cool completely.

5️⃣ Prepare the Frosting – Beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla, beating until fluffy.

6️⃣ Assemble & Frost – Spread frosting between layers and over the entire cake. Slice and enjoy!

Notes

No buttermilk? Substitute with 1 cup milk + 1 tbsp lemon juice or vinegar.
For cupcakes, bake at 350°F (175°C) for 18-20 minutes.
Chill before slicing for cleaner cuts and enhanced flavor!
