Ingredients

Scale

1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)

4 burger buns, toasted

Salt and black pepper to taste

4 slices cheddar cheese

1 tablespoon butter

½ cup thinly sliced onions

Pickles, lettuce, tomato (optional toppings)

Burger sauce or mayo (optional)

Instructions

1. Preheat a cast iron skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.

2. Divide ground beef into 4 equal portions and gently roll into loose balls.

3. Add butter and onions to the skillet, sauté until golden, then push aside.

4. Place a beef ball on the skillet and immediately smash it flat using a heavy spatula or burger press.

5. Season with salt and pepper.

6. Cook for 2–3 minutes until edges are crispy.

7. Flip, add cheese, and cook for 1–2 more minutes.

8. Toast buns if not already done.

9. Assemble burgers with desired toppings and sautéed onions.

10. Serve hot.

Notes

Use parchment paper between the spatula and meat to prevent sticking.

For extra flavor, toast buns in the beef drippings.

Double smash two patties per burger for an indulgent experience.
