1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp white vinegar
1 cup hot water
1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
1/4 cup cocoa powder
4 tbsp heavy cream or milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
White chocolate or royal icing for piping the web
Chocolate candies or gummy spiders for decoration
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a cupcake tin with cupcake liners.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk until well blended.
Add the vegetable oil, vanilla extract, white vinegar, and hot water. Mix until just combined.
Scoop the batter into the cupcake liners, filling them about two-thirds full.
Bake for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
Cool in the tin for about 5 minutes then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
For frosting, beat softened butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa, alternating with cream until smooth.
Frost cooled cupcakes using a knife or piping bag.
Pipe a spiral with melting white chocolate or royal icing for the spider web. Use a toothpick to create the web pattern.
Top with chocolate candies or gummy spiders.
