Optional: 1 cup cooked sausage or nuts for added texture and flavor
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Cut up your day-old bread into cubes and let it sit out to stale a bit if it’s fresh.
In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the diced onion and celery, and sauté until they become softened, about 5-7 minutes. Then toss in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
Sprinkle in the dried sage, thyme, and parsley. Season with salt and pepper. Stir everything together and let those flavors meld for a minute or so.
In a large bowl, place your cubed bread. Pour the sautéed vegetable mixture over the bread and toss gently to combine.
Gradually pour in the chicken or vegetable broth, starting with 2 cups. Gently mix until the bread is moist but not mushy. Add more broth if you prefer a wetter stuffing.
Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish. Spoon the stuffing mixture into the dish, and spread it out evenly.
Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the top is golden brown.
