  • ½ cup of buttermilk (or regular milk with a splash of vinegar)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
  • ½ cup of unsalted butter (1 stick) for frosting
  • 4 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 6 tablespoons of milk for frosting
  • 4 cups of powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract for frosting

  • Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt until they're evenly combined.
  • In a saucepan, melt the butter with the water over medium heat. Stir until it's all melted together, and then bring the mixture to a gentle boil.
  • Once the butter and water are boiling, carefully pour them into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Stir until just combined.
  • In a separate bowl, combine the buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract. Pour this mixture into your cake batter and gently fold until smooth.
  • Grease a large sheet pan (13 x 18 inches) and pour in the batter. Spread it evenly.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes. The top should spring back when gently pressed.
  • Allow the cake to cool for about 15 minutes on a wire rack.
  • For the frosting: Melt the butter for the frosting in a saucepan, then stir in the cocoa powder and milk. Bring to a gentle boil, whisking until smooth. Gradually stir in the powdered sugar and vanilla until creamy.
  • Pour the warm chocolate frosting over the still-warm cake and spread it out evenly.
