Ingredients
Scale
4 slices of bread
1/2 cup pizza sauce
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup pepperoni slices
Butter (for grilling)
Optional toppings: chopped bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, olives, or pineapple
Fresh garlic or herbs (optional)
Instructions
Prepare your campfire or grill: If you’re using a grill, preheat it to medium heat. For a campfire, let your fire burn down to glowing coals.
Butter the bread: Spread a generous layer of butter on one side of each slice of bread.
Assemble your pies: Take two slices of bread, butter side down. Spread a spoonful of pizza sauce over each slice. Top with shredded mozzarella, pepperoni, and any other toppings you enjoy. Then, place the second slice of bread on top, buttered side up.
Ready the pie iron: Place your assembled sandwich inside a pie iron and close it. If you don’t have one, you can wrap the pie in aluminum foil.
Cook over the heat: Place the pie iron over the campfire coals or on the grill. Cook for about 5 minutes, flipping halfway through.
Rest and serve: After cooking, remove the pie from the heat and let it cool for a minute. Slice in half if desired.
